External Wall Insulation

External wall insulation (EWI) is a great way to make your home warmer, more comfortable, and even more valuable. When we add insulation to the outside of your house, it helps keep the heat inside during winter and keeps your home cooler in summer.

What is External Wall Insulation?

External Wall Insulation involves fixing insulation boards to the outside walls of your home. These are then covered with a weatherproof, decorative render that not only protects the insulation but gives your home a fresh new look.

It’s like wrapping your house in a thermal blanket, reducing heat loss and keeping warmth where it belongs – inside!

External wall insulation (EWI) is a great way to make your home warmer, more comfortable, and even more valuable. When we add insulation to the outside of your house, it helps keep the heat inside during winter and keeps your home cooler in summer.

This means your heating systems don’t have to work as hard, so you use less energy and save money on your bills.

EWI also helps stop draughts and cold spots, making your home feel cosier all year round.

It can reduce problems like damp and condensation, which means a healthier place to live. Plus, by using less energy, you’re helping the environment and lowering your carbon footprint. Another bonus is that EWI can make your house look fresh and modern, and even increase its value if you ever want to sell.

Will External Wall Insulation Change How My House Looks?

Yes, external wall insulation will change the outside of your house-but in a good way! After we add the insulation, we finish it with a new layer, called render, which protects your home and gives it a brand-new look.

You can choose from over 100 different colours, various textures, and finishes to match your style or fit in with your neighbourhood. Whether you want a modern appearance or something more traditional, there are plenty of options to make your home look even better than before.

Is External Wall Insulation Effective?

Yes, extremely. For homes with solid, hollow block or cavity walls (common in Dublin), EWI can reduce heat loss by up to 45%, improve your BER rating, and make your home significantly more comfortable during Ireland’s long heating season.

How Much Money Will I Save on Energy Bills?

One of the best things about external wall insulation is the savings on your energy bills. Because your home keeps heat in better, you won’t need to use your heating as much in winter or your fans as much in summer.

Most people can save between €350 and €800 a year, depending on the size of your home and how much energy you use. Some studies show you could cut your energy bills by up to 40%. Over time, these savings can really add up, making External Wall Insulation a smart investment for your home and your wallet!

How Much Does External Wall Insulation Cost in Ireland?

Costs vary depending on the size of your home, wall condition, and the finish chosen.
Typical ranges for homes in Dublin:

  • Terraced Home: €10,000–€14,000   (Grant €3,500)
  • Semi-Detached: €12,000–€16,000    (Grant €6,000)
  • Detached: €15,000–€20,000+            (Grant €8,000)

Don’t forget: SEAI grants can cover up to €8,000, making the upgrade much more affordable.

Other benefits from External Wall Insulation that you did not know about

Weatherproofing and Protection: Adding EWI protects your walls from wind, rain, and harsh weather. This can make your home last longer by reducing wear and tear on the building’s structure.

Durability and Low Maintenance: Once installed, EWI is long-lasting and requires little upkeep, saving you time and money in the long run.

With RH Insulation, you get more than just warmth and savings-you get a home that looks exactly how you want it, with top-quality finishes that last.

How long does external wall insulation last?

Longevity is a key concern. EWI typically comes with a 20-year guarantee and requires only minimal maintenance.

What preparation is needed before installation?

Usually, obstacles near the walls need to be cleared and access provided.

The main preparation is managing your Electricity & Gas providers.

If you have an electricity meter box (White Box) at the side of your house, then the electricity is ground fed and we can work away.  However, if the meter is inside, then usually you have high-level wires connected to your house.  ESB Networks will have to disconnect this cable prior to our works and re-connect after our works.  Your house will then be without power for 2-3 weeks.  Please be aware that it could take ESB Networks up to 5 months before they are available to disconnect.

Similarly, but not as bad, Bord Gais need to move the gas supply 100mm away from your wall.  Their lead time is generally a couple of weeks. You also need a certified Gas Plumber to disconnect your house & re-connect your house.

Do I Need Planning Permission?

In most cases: no.

However, planning permission may be required if:

  • You live in a protected structure or conservation area.
  • You’re significantly altering the external appearance.

We’ll advise you based on your address and assist with any application if needed.

Will I Need Other Upgrades for the Grant?

To qualify for External Wall Insulation Grants, you must meet Part L of the Building Regulations.  This generally implies:

  • Attic insulation – 300mm Mineral Wool, Tank & Pipes Lagged, Vented
  • Ventilation upgrades – Extractor Fans to Utility, Bathroom, Kitchen
  • Heating system improvements – Boiler less than 10-12 years old
  • Cavity Wall – If you have Cavity Walls they need to be pumped

We’ll guide you on exactly what’s required and offer all services under one roof.

Window Sill Upgrades

When we fit external wall insulation, we also update your window sills. Our sills are made from strong aluminium, which means they last a long time and protect your home from rain.

Even better, aluminium sills can be painted any colour you like-so you can match your windows to your new wall finish or choose a bold colour to make them stand out. This gives you full control over your home’s final look while ensuring everything is weatherproof and low maintenance.

External wall insulation involves fixing insulation boards to the outside walls of a property before applying a protective render finish. This helps reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the appearance of the home.

External wall insulation creates a thermal barrier around the outside of the property. This helps keep heat inside during winter and can reduce overheating during warmer months, improving comfort throughout the year.

Yes. External wall insulation can significantly improve the energy efficiency of a home, reduce heat loss, lower heating bills, and improve indoor comfort. Many homeowners also benefit from an improved BER rating and a refreshed exterior appearance.

Walls can account for up to 35% of a home’s heat loss. Insulating external walls can help reduce this heat loss and improve overall energy performance.

External wall insulation is commonly installed on:

  • Detached homes
  • Semi-detached homes
  • End-terrace properties
  • Bungalows
  • Older homes with solid walls

A property survey can determine whether external wall insulation is suitable for a specific home.

Cavity wall insulation is installed inside the gap between two wall layers. External wall insulation is fitted to the outside of the property and is often used on homes with solid walls that do not have a cavity.

The cost depends on factors including:

  • Property size
  • Wall area
  • Type of insulation used
  • Access requirements
  • Existing wall condition
